TURNED VESSELS AND SCULPTURES

These pieces represent a new direction for my work. The combination of lathe turned elements and the various shaped components I've used in my furniture design results in a different dynamic, a more sculptural look. The sensuousness of the round shapes plays off the more rectilinear structure of the supporting members, providing tension and release. A number of the pieces are reliquaries and contain hidden containers. A reliquary is a vessel designed to hold a small precious object, or "relic". This object could be a ring, a precious gem, a document, anything highly valued by the owner. These secret compartments provide a little surprise and add depth and substance to the piece.

To order any of the available pieces, call me at 630-971-0690 or email me at apcarter@sbcglobal.net.

Featured as "photo of the day" on the World of Woodturners website in October, 2009

$1850.00

The photo below shows the hidden container that's revealed when the top finial is removed. The container unscrews from the finial to reveal a secret compartment to hide a small precious item.

THE SECRETS WITHIN

Eucalyptus burl, Ebony, Indian Rosewood, Maple

19"Hx10"Wx10"D

$2200.00

This piece was chosen as the cover photo for the day, 7-7-10, on the World of Woodturners site. I've been so honored several times and it's always a big thrill.

This is probably the most complex piece I've made to date. It's a reliquary, meaning it has a hidden container inside that can hold a precious object, or "relic", but that hidden container is also a cryptex. (Think "da Vinci Code") The small turned element with the brass finial visible through the opening in the ebony turning on the underside is actually attached to the cryptex. When you romove the top, the cryptex with the attached pieces comes out as well.

The cryptex is opened by turning the 4 rings with the letters until they line up properly, spelling out the password. In this case, it's "open me" on 2 adjacent lines. Not too clever a password, but it works.

A DELICATE BALANCE

Figured maple, Sapele, Maple, Indian rosewood, Crushed rock, Brass pins

16"Wx14"Hx7 1/2"D

$1650.00

SOLD
It was sold at the American Association of Woodturners annual symposium as part of their fundraising live auction in June, 2010.

The top finial lifts off to reveal a small reliquary. The lower finial holds an open sided "egg" containing a small suspended ornament. The crushed rock is glued in place to prevent spilling. The whole piece can be turned upside down without dislodging the crushed rock base.
